Student Visa for India from Bhutan

Introduction

The Indian student visa (S visa) is the authorisation that allows bhutanese students to study full-time at a recognised Indian university. This page explains the requirements, documents, process, fees, processing time and free guidance for bhutanese applicants applying from Bhutan.

Indian Student Visa Overview

The student visa is granted on the basis of an unconditional admission letter from a recognised Indian university. It is valid for the duration of the course and may be extended in India. The visa is issued by the Indian mission in New Delhi (Bhutan).

Eligibility

• An unconditional admission letter from a recognised Indian university.
• A passport with at least six months validity and two blank pages.
• Proof of sufficient funds for tuition and living expenses.
• A clean character/antecedent record.
• Meeting any health requirements.

Required Documents

• Valid passport (six months+ validity, two blank pages).
• Unconditional admission letter from the Indian university.
• Completed student visa application form.
• Passport-size photographs per specification.
• Proof of funds (bank statements / sponsorship affidavit).
• Attested academic documents.
• Visa fee receipt.
• Medical/health certificate where required.

Application Process

Bhutanese students do not require a visa to study in India under the India–Bhutan treaty; an eligible-route permit and university admission letter suffice. The Indian Embassy in Thimphu and missions in Delhi assist with documentation.

1. Secure admission and obtain the unconditional admission letter.
2. Complete the online visa application and gather documents.
3. Book an appointment and submit the application at the Indian mission in New Delhi.
4. Pay the visa fee and attend biometrics/interview if required.
5. Collect the visa and plan travel and university registration.

Visa Fees & Processing Time

Visa fees vary by nationality and reciprocity; bhutanese students should confirm the current fee with the Indian mission in New Delhi. Processing typically takes 5–10 working days, though some cases may take longer. Apply well ahead of the intake.
